The knights were the most sought after warriors. The Sword

The sword surpassed its status of weapon and became knights’ emblem. The more elaborate the carvings and inscriptions were, the wealthier the knight was thought to be. On the top of the hierarchy was the king, whose sword had golden hilt and was decorated with numerous gems. The two most famous swords in the Medieval history are Excalibur – King Arthur’s mythical sword which it has been said to have magical powers- and Joyeuse – Charlemagne’s sword. A copy of this latter sword (some even claim it is the original) can be admired at the Louvre Museum.

Knights were also highly skilled in fighting with the lance. Due to its long handle, the lance favored mounted warriors. One knight using a lance could have killed hundreds of pedestrians. The only ones out of the reach of knights were the archers, who were not involved in corporal fights.

Each knight had a dagger hidden somewhere in his armor, so that he will never remain without a weapon in a fight. The dagger was only taken off in dangerous situations, when there was no other way to defeat the enemy.

The social rank of a knight was built on their war success, so they took pride in their weaponry as well as in their outfit. A knight would never be seen without his sword, so if you are planning in reenacting a medieval scene with knights or you want to dress up as a knight for Halloween, make sure you have your sword and/or lance with you. It will give you a more realistic look and will have damsels asking you to go on heroic quests.

When the husband was at home, the chores were split between the woman and the man, with the woman taking care of the family, surveying the slaves and attending guests and the man looking after the businesses, rivalries and finances. Like in the male case, there were two ways in which a woman could obtain the title of knight. The first one was to be hold land under the knight’s fee or to enter an order of the knights. Both ways were used by women to become knights with full rights.

Female Orders of Knights

In Catalonia there existed the order of Hatchet for women knights. In Italy it was the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the women having that order were called militissa. In England, there was the Garter Order for royal women and wives of knights, yet women who did not have a high social rank have also entered the order.

In France, two there were special words to name the wife of a knight – chevalière and the woman knight – chevaleresse. A special case is that of Joan of Arc, who even though it is reported to have worn the armor and mounted dressed as a man, has not receive any order or rank. This is maybe explict through the fact that she did not fight or actually killed an enemy, and she did not use the sword. But she did inspire and lead, much like a military general.

Medieval armor was indispensable for knights. They offered protection against enemy attacks and at the same time they were a mark of a knight’s wealth and social rank. Armor, as well as horses and weapons, were quite expensive for that age, so only the wealthy could afford them.

During the medieval period, two major types of armor have mainly been used: chainmail and metal plate armor.

Chainmail Armor

Highly popular for most of the medieval period, chainmail armor was made of thousands of hand-made metal rings interwoven in a fabric-like material. However, they had one disadvantage: they could not stop the attack of highly pointed weapons, so a more solid replacement was needed.

Metal Plate Armor

Plate armor was used in antiquity, but the art was lost in the early middle ages. Re-formulated in the 13th and 14th centuries as a response to knights’ request for better protection, metal plate armor was made exclusively out of large pieces of metal. It included a chest piece which was tied at the sides, arm pieces, leg pieces and a headpiece, so that the entire body was covered in metal. Places that could not be covered with metal plate (such as the joints) were usually covered with chain mail. While this was the solution for a thorough protection against any type of medieval weapon, the new armor type was stiff, extremely heavy and highly uncomfortable.

In spite of its stiffness and heaviness, this armor is the one remaining in tales, stories and epic writings, and is associated with gleaming knights in the high middles ages. Moreover, each damsel was waiting for her knight in shining armor, while every little page dreamed of it. As the centuries advanced, plate armor became more refined and decorated, until the advent of firearms rendered them obsolete.
