So, you have decided to disguise as a knight for Halloween! This is a spectacular costume that will automatically put you in the top of most handsome men in the neighborhood. While most costumes only need shoes and sometimes a wig or a matching bag, the knight costume will take more to assemble to make it look extremely realistic. Yet, once you have managed to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, there will be nobody else as good looking as you.

The first step you have to do is purchase the costume you like the most. You will usually get a tunic, a pair of pants, a belt and in some cases even a pair of gloves and/or headpiece. When you have the costume delivered home, it is high time to look for accessories.

Because there will be many things to think about, it is recommended that you make a list of all the things you need. Start with the items that are closer to your body, such as arm and leg gauntlets and headpiece. There are plenty available on the market, but it is essential to get the ones which are very much alike your costume. To make sure that they all match you can purchase a set.

Then look for a matching cape. It will look more dramatic and it will add further charm to the overall look. The great thing about the cape is that you do not have to look for the exact color or shade. Choose a black, silvery or burgundy cape and most certainly it will fit the costume perfectly.

Once your outfit is ready, it is high time to take a look at the shields and weaponry available on the market. There are two ways to purchase the necessary weapons for the perfect knight costume. One is to purchase actual replicas of medieval weapons and shields. They are perfect for reenactments as well as for special events when you need things to look as real as possible. These pieces, made of stainless steel, follow the exact pattern of medieval weaponry. Yes, they certainly cost more, but if you’ve ever wanted to buy one to display in your home, now’s your chance. And they aren’t thousands of dollars, like some people may think – you can get a superb quality, hand-crafted replica starting at less than sixty dollars.

If you do not want to invest a large sum of money in weaponry, you can go for plastic swords offered by costume shops. They may not be as accurate as the metal ones, but they are certainly decent, and some are beginning to look quite impressively realistic. (If you’re going to a Halloween party, I would recommend a plastic sword – your replica sword will likely be classed as an actual weapon!)

Accessories can make or ruin a costume, so you need to be very careful in choosing them. The texture, color and material are as important as the model itself, so make sure you are well informed about this and can properly anticipate how they will complement the entire medieval knight costume.

The conflicts having as goal the conquest of a neighboring town, village or castle were rather frequent. Often, simple discussions between feudal owners would result in local wars with multiple victims and a disaster in the affected areas. Furthermore, the Medieval period was also the era of the Crusades to the Holy Land. To protect themselves in a period when conflicts ruled the world and to be able to fight back the enemies attacking their lands, the landlords needed to invest in large armies formed of skilled warriors.

The knights were the most sought after warriors. Apart from their superior position during warfare (knights fought only mounted on their horses), the knights were also the only ones who could partially or totally afford the expenses associated with training and war participation (horses and equipment). Quality equipment meant more chances to win a fight, which is what most landlords were looking for.

The Sword

While there were plenty of options for medieval weapons, by far the most popular choice was the sword. The sword of a knight was double edged and was made of low carbon steel. It usually featured a crossguard, pommel and hilt, which bore different inscriptions, according to the soldier’s wealth and social status. The knights’ favorite inscriptions were their names or certain verses (usually prayers). Gems and precious metals were used for the extremely wealthy knights.

Five models of swords have dominated the medieval period:

the Broadsword (the earliest medieval sword, measuring 30 – 45 inches long),

The Falchion Sword (short and heavy, with one edge),

The Greatsword (50 – 72 inches long, with a handle of 18 – 20 inches long – it is the greatest medieval sword),

The Longsword (44 – 50 inches long) and

The Scimitar (featuring a curved end blade and sharp point, mainly used by crusaders).

The sword surpassed its status of weapon and became knights’ emblem. The more elaborate the carvings and inscriptions were, the wealthier the knight was thought to be. On the top of the hierarchy was the king, whose sword had golden hilt and was decorated with numerous gems. The two most famous swords in the Medieval history are Excalibur – King Arthur’s mythical sword which it has been said to have magical powers- and Joyeuse – Charlemagne’s sword. A copy of this latter sword (some even claim it is the original) can be admired at the Louvre Museum.

Knights were also highly skilled in fighting with the lance. Due to its long handle, the lance favored mounted warriors. One knight using a lance could have killed hundreds of pedestrians. The only ones out of the reach of knights were the archers, who were not involved in corporal fights.

Each knight had a dagger hidden somewhere in his armor, so that he will never remain without a weapon in a fight. The dagger was only taken off in dangerous situations, when there was no other way to defeat the enemy.

The social rank of a knight was built on their war success, so they took pride in their weaponry as well as in their outfit. A knight would never be seen without his sword, so if you are planning in reenacting a medieval scene with knights or you want to dress up as a knight for Halloween, make sure you have your sword and/or lance with you. It will give you a more realistic look and will have damsels asking you to go on heroic quests.

While the Medieval period was rather violent, no war could have equaled the hardships a knight had to face to win his lady’s heart and hand. Jousts and skill competitions were organized to prove the knight’s abilities in front of his chosen one, and when two or more knights were fighting for the hand of the same lady, the battles were even more ardent. Yet, the code of chivalry asked that the weak would be protected, while the enemy should be respected. Thus, in order to be a real knight one must have fully understand and obey the rules in any circumstances, including love affairs.

The medieval lady of standing was usually educated, with knowledge of Latin and literature. The education of a lady started as early as six years old in a foreign castle or church. Their skills were significantly different from the men’s as they were mainly taught “feminine” things like reading, writing, dancing and taking care of the household.

The medieval ladies dressed up in long bell-sleeved gowns with simple lines that complemented their silhouette. Thin women were in fashion during those times and women with wasp-like waist attracted all eyes to them. Corsets were usually used for further thinning the waist.

Medieval women were strong, devoted and dedicated persons, capable of being both feminine and delicate and at the same time caring for the entire castle, properties and finances when their husbands were away in battle or crusades. They were the true heroes of the medieval age, complete individuals endowed with sensibility, intelligence and force.

A medieval costume will make a great honor to any modern woman conscientious of her value. A perfect medieval lady costume should include a long gown or a lace-up corset with a long skirt. For more charm, fold one layer of the skirt/dress in the hip area so it will look more voluminous. Choose a shirt/gown with bell sleeves and tight bodice.

It is highly recommended that the gown or skirt and top are solid colors. Burgundy, green, white, black and blue are the most commonly used colors for such an outfit. They work great combined with golden accessories such as belts, earrings and rings. Veils, nets or tight-fitting caps were the main ways of covering and at the same time embellishing the head. Pieces of fabric were used by some women to frame their face, while others preferred to leave their hair fall on their shoulders.

Pair up the medieval lady costume with a knight costume and become the perfect lord and lady of the castle!

The image of medieval women in society was much different than that told in stories and histories (which were mainly written by men.) While the men are regarded as being endowed with force and intelligence, women are portrayed as helpless creatures who had nothing else to do than sew and sigh all day long, waiting for their knights to come back home. It may be true that the knights held the power, but women’s role in society as well as in her family was certainly different from what the stories and romantic poets depict.

When the husband was at home, the chores were split between the woman and the man, with the woman taking care of the family, surveying the slaves and attending guests and the man looking after the businesses, rivalries and finances. However, there were great periods of time (months, sometimes even years), when the knights will not come home. Then, the wife was both wife and husband and took care of everything – servants, finances, even politics. There were even times when women have put aside their gorgeous dresses to mount on the horse and become medieval warriors, defending their homes or fighting back sieges that were threatening the castle.

While this was the role of women in medieval society, there were also women who refused to conform to the status of knight wife or daughter of a landlord. Their dream was to become women knights and join in battle. As hard as it may be for a modern reader to believe, there actually were women knights who took part in wars and for whom fighting was their second nature. Dressed up and disguised as men, they have trained in the art of sword”wom”manship and have fought in many battles.

Like in the male case, there were two ways in which a woman could obtain the title of knight. The first one was to be hold land under the knight’s fee or to enter an order of the knights. Both ways were used by women to become knights with full rights.

Female Orders of Knights

In Catalonia there existed the order of Hatchet for women knights. In Italy it was the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the women having that order were called militissa. In England, there was the Garter Order for royal women and wives of knights, yet women who did not have a high social rank have also entered the order.

In France, two there were special words to name the wife of a knight – chevalière and the woman knight – chevaleresse. A special case is that of Joan of Arc, who even though it is reported to have worn the armor and mounted dressed as a man, has not receive any order or rank. This is maybe explict through the fact that she did not fight or actually killed an enemy, and she did not use the sword. But she did inspire and lead, much like a military general.

So, if you are a woman, put on your shining armor and fit into a medieval knight costume and be a glorious heroine this Halloween!

Looking for some medieval armor for your knight costume? Get some here!

Medieval armor was indispensable for knights. They offered protection against enemy attacks and at the same time they were a mark of a knight’s wealth and social rank. Armor, as well as horses and weapons, were quite expensive for that age, so only the wealthy could afford them.

During the medieval period, two major types of armor have mainly been used: chainmail and metal plate armor.

Chainmail Armor

Highly popular for most of the medieval period, chainmail armor was made of thousands of hand-made metal rings interwoven in a fabric-like material. The process of making chainmail was rather painstaking as each one of the chains was made and linked with the other chains manually. While this may sound tedious and take a long time to make, blacksmiths churned them out on a regular basis to make it the basic armor for the soldier and knight.

The main advantage associated with this type of armor was freedom of movement. When wearing this type of armor, knights were still able to move freely and strike the opponent with force. However, they had one disadvantage: they could not stop the attack of highly pointed weapons, so a more solid replacement was needed.

Metal Plate Armor

Plate armor was used in antiquity, but the art was lost in the early middle ages. Re-formulated in the 13th and 14th centuries as a response to knights’ request for better protection, metal plate armor was made exclusively out of large pieces of metal. It included a chest piece which was tied at the sides, arm pieces, leg pieces and a headpiece, so that the entire body was covered in metal. Places that could not be covered with metal plate (such as the joints) were usually covered with chain mail. While this was the solution for a thorough protection against any type of medieval weapon, the new armor type was stiff, extremely heavy and highly uncomfortable.

In spite of its stiffness and heaviness, this armor is the one remaining in tales, stories and epic writings, and is associated with gleaming knights in the high middles ages. Moreover, each damsel was waiting for her knight in shining armor, while every little page dreamed of it. As the centuries advanced, plate armor became more refined and decorated, until the advent of firearms rendered them obsolete.

Knight Halloween Costumes

When deciding to put on a knight armor for Halloween, there is one thing you will need to decide: chain mail or plate mail. It depends on your preference and who you wish to go as. Most Halloween armor is made of plastic or rubber, and can look highly realistic. King Arthur and his knights would have all worn chain mail (no matter what the movies show), and most medieval costumes depict chain mail, mainly because manufacturers can easily design gleaming fabric to make it look like flexible grey chain armor. For full plate mail, outfits are available, as well as buying pieces as accessories for your medieval costume.

In the end, the decision is all yours! Yet, make sure that you choose the option which makes you really happy! Also, do not forget to accessorize your armor accordingly so that you will look like a wealthy, respected knight.

There’s the story tale element of princes rescuing damsels, of fairies and godmothers, of chivalrous knights battling for what’s right. The fascination with the medieval setting and characters is something which has transcended time and generations. If your child shares the passion for knights, try a gorgeous knight costume and introduce them to the life children had before becoming knights.

View all kid’s knight costumes

Page

The page was a child of 7 to 10 years old who was removed from mundane family life in order to receive proper training to become a knight. In the first stage of the training, the child would be made a page and during this period they will be familiarized with horsemanship, introduced to the weapons a knight must use and will perform different duties around the knight’s castle.

Squire

If your boy is older than that, you can promote him to the rank of squire. The squires, boys over 14, were taught how to use the sword, were in charge of polishing the knight’s armor and his weapons and were introduced to a special training meant to improve their physical abilities. Also, the code of chivalry and the rules of perfect moral conduct were taught to them. In order to make them proud of becoming a knight, they were told stories about the great knights of the time.

Full Knight

The age of 21 was the time when most of the squires could become knights. A special ceremony was held in the honor of the new knight, usually sprinkled with religious symbols to make knights lawful on earth and in front of God.

While the page and squire outfits were usually plain, the knights had shiny armor and bright colored clothes made of great materials. Thus, it is almost certain that your child will like the knight costumes better than the page and squire ones. So, in order to rise up to their expectations you should purchase them a chainmail-like knight costume, match it with a sword and shield and be ready for the battle as your little knight will provoke anyone to duels.

A medieval knight costume can be a very good way of sharing with your child the knowledge you know about knights. Being dressed as one of the characters of the story, they will be more likely to involve in it and listen to its ending more carefully then simple bedtime stories. Also, it will make the storytelling more dynamic and will stir their imagination even more.

Most knight costumes are also extremely accurate looking and highly comfortable, so your child will actually feel like an heroic character out of a fabulous legend. Just wait and see the stories they have to tell when they get back from an exciting Halloween “knight” of trick or treating!

Each year, most schools have a Halloween party for their classes. There are some easy Halloween treats out there that you can make with little trouble.

You can always go with easy Halloween treats that you can get from the store. If you have little time, you should never apologize for taking the easy route. You can look through the candy aisles for something interesting, but don’t forget about the bakery of your local grocery store.

You can get some already made up cupcakes for your easy Halloween treats. You can also take a few moments to make up your own cupcakes for easy Halloween treats to take to school. Be sure you have something to transport these easy Halloween treats to the school without a mishap.

Easy Halloween treats are not always about the treats. Then you can add whatever treats you have chosen to the pumpkin and then that can go to school. Kids will love it. You can find many interesting ways to present your easy Halloween treats if you take a moment to shop around. The Internet should give you some pretty fun choices, so don’t forget to look there.

There is always that one house on the block that has gone all out with the Halloween decorations, and you can not get enough of it. You can change that if you get some good ideas, and if you know where to shop. For a very elegant but eerie look, you can go out and get some delicate lace, tons of fake spider web, and some white, twinkling lights for your Halloween decorations.

You can place the lights where you would like to decorate, and then cover them with the lace and the spider webs. Keep them a safe distance from the light. Don’t worry, these Halloween decorations are going to look very cool, even when you have been safe about placement. When thinking of Halloween decorations for the outdoors, you have much more from which to choose.

You can light up your walkway with some spooky lights, and have some interesting things hiding in the shadows. You can also use a fog machine to have the perfect effect for your Halloween decorations when you are expecting children to come by on Halloween night. Use lighting sparsely for the spooky look you hope to achieve.
